  TINGRI TO LALUNG LA

Total distance cycled: 88 kms

Morning altitude: 4340 meters (14,200 feet)

Highest altitude: 5010 meters (16,400 feet)

Evening altitude: 4864 meters (16,000 feet)

It was another picture perfect day as we left the depressing town of Tingri. We had a beautiful morning's ride across the high plains of Tibet--so similar to parts of Montana and Wyoming--only much higher. It was a flat road with long straight legs stretching to the horizon. Our goal was the 5000 meter Lalung La pass. We had lunch in a delightful river valley at the base of the pass. But literally while we were stopped there, a stiff headwind started to form. And while headwinds are much less troublesome at altitude, this one quickly built into a gale. So now we were faced with a long climb directly into the wind. We decided to stick together, and with me on point, ground up the long climb. It would have been very pleasant if not for the wind, as the views were spectacular, the grade was gentle, and the sky was clear. As it was, however, it was a long and very difficult slog. We crested the top and descended into the high valley between the Lalung La and Thang La passes, both 5000+ meters. One last night at altitude for us, and one last night in tents, and it looks to be a cold one at this high and windy campsite.

Pictures below, left column, then right column: The last view of Everest is behind me. It was a delightful and easy morning ride. After lunch, we stick in a tight group to fight the wind. I'm leading the diminished pack into the teeth of the wind over the pass. The views are wonderful. Our last campsite.
